Freedom

Why do we all loathe the Christian “law?” We think there is more fun and freedom outside its boundaries. There is a part of us that is enticed by what’s on the “other side.” Most of us are not totally convinced that life is better when we live within God’s framework for our lives. I know this is true for my self. Sure, I KNOW what’s right and true. I KNOW that living completely and totally within God’s boundaries for my life will bring me the most joy and satisfaction, but that doesn’t mean I always do it. And when I choose to go against that creed my true character is revealed. Maybe I don’t believe it as much as I thought?

In the physical realm, where there are no laws there is anarchy. The most dangerous places in the world are the most lawless places in the world. Think Baghdad. Think Somalia. Think Haiti. According to Jack Stratton, research director at Control Risks Group, an international risk consulting company based in London, "The most dangerous environments are found in failed states where there has been a total or partial breakdown in governance and, therefore, in law and order. Criminals and terrorists can operate with virtual impunity.” Who of us wants to live in a place like this? There is no freedom in these places – only fear and oppression because anyone can do anything he or she chooses, so there is violence and killing.

On the flip-side, the safest places in the world are those cities and nations where there are the most law abiding citizens. Peace reigns. This truth found in our physical world is also true in the spiritual realm. God’s laws are not oppressive. Quite the opposite is true; they bring freedom.
